Dr Jako Olivier is an Adviser: Higher Education at the Commonwealth of Learning in Vancouver, Canada and an Adjunct Professor of Open Education at the University of Nova Gorica, Slovenia. At the Commonwealth of Learning, he leads the ‘Developing a Commonwealth Credit Transfer Framework for Micro-credentials’ project, which has led to the development of the ‘Commonwealth Micro-credential Framework for Lifelong Learning’ and the development of a number of national and regional micro-credentials frameworks and policies. Here, he also supports governments and universities in the Commonwealth on micro-credentials, recognition of prior learning, open and distance learning, open educational resources, quality assurance and the promotion of graduate employability. Previously, he was a professor at North-West University in South Africa, where he established the UNESCO Chair on Multimodal Learning and Open Educational Resources. He has also taught at different levels of education in South Africa, the United Kingdom and Belgium. Currently, he serves on the advisory board of the Open Education for a Better World initiative and the editorial boards of several academic journals. As an active researcher, he has published 75 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, and edited 10 books. His research and advocacy work are focused on micro-credentials, open and distance learning, self-directed learning, open educational resources, and multilingualism in education.
